On larger pieces some people knit an extra 2-5 stitches back there as a sort of a steek, then sew a mattress stitch seam to eliminate them. Because mattress stitch can be near-invisible, then the seam isn't seen. But I don't like seams in socks. I live with the join line, knowing socks for most of history had either a real or imitation seam line down the back. Please keep experimenting and let us know if you find a better way.
